Addicted to the Internet

By | Technology News | No Comments

Internet addiction is one of the fastest growing and largest addictions in America.  Social media networking and media streaming are some of the major culprits and reasons why Americans are averaging more hours than ever staring into the computer screens.  While the addiction may not necessarily be bad for a person’s body, it is an addiction none the less.  Here are a few tips to beat it:

The first step in beating any addiction is to admit there is a problem.  Take a second and realize how much time every day is spent on the computer, or an internet device, and try and calculate what exactly is accomplished with this time.  Most likely it is just a habit formed to be a time waster, but ask yourself if the addiction is impeding on work or social life.  If it is then it may be paramount to make a lifestyle change.

To beat the addiction set some hard rules for how often you spend time on the internet.  Don’t cut yourself completely form internet use, or go cold turkey, but instead try to wean yourself off slowly.  Try to first cut your time down in half and set specific time limits for how much time you have to surf.  After a few weeks when you have become acclimated, cut it further until you reach a level you feel is no longer an addiction.

Don’t feel alone.  This is an addiction that is affecting millions every day.  Try to find a support group, not on the internet, or others in the area who are also suffering.  Sometimes peer support is the best way to get through an addiction.  Listen to the advice of others and read a few self-help books.

Try to develop a hobby or interest that doesn’t involve the internet, TV or video games.  Join a sports team, learn to dance, or join a gym to fill this new found free time.  Not only do you want to replace your addiction, you should look for a healthy alternative. Cook your own meals or help the usual meal provider prepare meals is a great and constructive way to spend time.

Hang out with your friends!  The best way to forget about anything is to have fun.  Go to the bowling alley, hang out at the mall, or catch a drink after work with some buddies to let off some steam without using a computer.

If you have homework or work outside the office get it done as soon as possible.  Procrastination usually leads backs to bad habits, such as internet use, so try and get work done quickly.  You may even surprise yourself at how much better the finished product is with focused work.

Facebook’s Graph Search Similar to AOL

By | Technology News | No Comments

Facebook has now created Graph Search a service to help users find anything through Facebook such as updates, photos, and more similar to AOL’s program.

Back in the dial-up days AOL was king, and internet users had to pay a monthly fee. Facebook can be compared to AOL, due to the lengthy amount of times users spend using the service.

Facebook has loads of data that it can share with people but getting it out wasn’t easy till now. It’s Graph Search has made it possible, so that anyone can delve into that data and find the information Facebook has stored.

Users can now search for friends by their interests, photos, activity, and status updates.  Theoretically, Facebook could be used as a dating service, if isn’t already, to help users find mates by certain categories.

Graph Search has by no means made Facebook its own self-sustaining network.  Google is still the search engine juggernaut and Amazon is known as the marketplace of the internet, but with Graph Search, Facebook could become an online social Sandbox.

Facebook is slowly putting the pieces together to become its own living community: diverse means of communication, news distribution, commerce, entertainment, media sharing, and even application development.

In the future you could plan a trip completely through Facebook from buying your tickets to booking your hotels and flights.

Google uses a complex formula to find and record data, whereas Facebook has compiled its data by studying the way people connect online.

Graph search is giving Facebook the opportunity to bring it forward into the future as a self-sustaining bubble in the internet.

By | Technology News | No Comments

The media giant Google announced today their “Google Apps for Businesses” must now be purchase for $50 a year.

The services will include email, a calendar and an online “office suite,” which should host a number of helpful applications to run a business.  Users will also now be able to purchase additional storage as well as archiving service.

Businesses that already sign up for Google’s app services will still be able to use the service for free along with individual users.

According to the latest studies, Google’s services are now used by 50 percent of the world wide population. In 2011, over 40 million people used a Google service, such as Google’s search engine, g-mail, and huge number of other applications.

Not to be left behind, Microsoft has released a similar package called “Office 365” which offers similar services, as well as online versions of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and Excel.  Microsoft plans to charge users a slightly higher fee of $6 per month for the service.

Google first launched its “Google Apps for Businesses” in 2007 and was free for most small business based upon the number of employees using the product within the company.  Since this time, the company has slowly decreased the number of employees allowed to qualify for the free small business service from 50 employees to 10.  The free service is now no longer available for small business.

Space Station to Test Low-Cost Space Dwelling

By | Technology News | No Comments

The International Space Station will be testing a low-cost dwelling that will inflate like a balloon while in orbit.

The BEAM or Bigelow Expandable Activity Module will be flown by Bigelow Aerospace and is the 3rd orbital prototype developed by them. Testing BEAM aboard the station will open future outposts and more for NASA.

Robert Bigelow is the owner of Bigelow Aerospace who has created the BEAM and he is also the founder of Budget Suites of America. Bigelow has 2 unmanned habitats in orbit now, the Genesis 1 and the Genesis 2 and they have been there since ’06 and ’07.

BEAM is 13ft long and 10.5ft in diameter once it is inflated. The planned flight on the Space Exploration Dragon Cargo Ship is set mid-2015.

The BEAM is the first module constructed for human occupancy that is expandable.

If the test flight is successful the planned space outposts staffed by Bigelow personnel would be a definite thing of the future. The company wants to lease to different types of companies for research, businesses and even for vacations.

He already has agreements with space and research agencies that are outside of the U.S

NASA is interested in the technology for various things such as housing for expeditions and research.

The BEAM habitats will be of use for all kinds of exploration missions, it launches easier and cheaper than previous habitats have because of the materials it is made out of.

NASA had previously studied inflatable habitats but didn’t have the budget to keep testing and political issues also help to prompt the cancellation of the project, Bigelow picked up the licensing for it later and developed what we now know as BEAM.

NASA is hoping to have a space transportation system available to fly by the end of 2017; they have investments in 3 companies to be able to do so. The space station will have 15 nations working on it together.

The companies that NASA is working with are Boeing Co, Sierra Nevada Corp, and SpaceX; Bigelow has agreements with two of these for launch services. SpaceX is planning a test launch by the end of 2015, Boeings first piloted flight is scheduled for 2016.

CEO of HTC, Peter Chou, Looks ahead to 2013

By | Technology News | No Comments

It may be the time for HTC to reconsider their tagline of “quietly brilliant”.

In an official interview today with the Wall Street Journal, HTC’s CEO Peter Chou commented on the HTC’s financial failures in 2012. According to Chou, HTC has fallen behind its competitors due to a lack of effective marketing.

This is a sentiment that echoes what HTC’s president of global sales and market, Jason Mackenzie, said during fall of 2012, when he stated that “Samsung spent four to six times more in advertising than us.”

Although Chou tried to remain upbeat in his interview with the Wall Street Journal, when commenting on the future of his company he said, “The worst for HTC has probably passed… 2013 will not be too bad.

Chou is probably right on this count- short of going bankrupt, HTC can’t fall much further than it has in the last year. Despite having an astonishing profit margin of 13% in 2011, HTC saw a sharp decrease in their revenue as the effects of poor marketing tactics began to take their toll. By October of 2012, HTC saw an overall decrease of 61%; a devastating financial blow to the company.

If HTC is going to be able to survive the year, the company needs readjust their marketing strategy and branch out. For example, the One X was one of HTC’s top products for 2012. However, HTC managed to severely limit their customer base by making the One X available for AT&T users exclusively.

Although T-Mobile and Sprint picked up knock-offs of the One X (namely the “One S” and the “One V”), neither one of these phones are able to compete with the One X or any of the top of the line smartphones which are currently on the market. The other leading phone carrier, Verizon Wireless, passed on the “One” phones entirely.

After the “One X” came the Droid DNA in November. Despite the mildly-popular public reception of the new Droid phone, HTC was unable to recoup their large loss of profit from earlier in the year and is failing to keep up with Apple and Samsung. Although Chou claimed today that the company will be making a comeback as it releases new, innovative technology, it would take a miracle for HTC to regain a position of power among Apple and Samsung.
