SEO in Marketing: The Primary Goal

The search engine optimization procedure is actually the fundamental and essential part that will help to position your website properly on the search engines when people need to visit your site. Before you delve into the essential factors for SEO, the first thing that must be clear is what the actual function of SEO in marketing for any website is. The primary goal of any SEO is to achieve a good ranking and communicate to the search engines regarding your intentions so that your website can be presented or recommended for the relevant searches. Now that the function of the SEO in marketing has been briefed, here is the list of the following factors that must be considered while carrying out SEO for any specific website.

The first factor that you must consider is, SEO adds the essential ingredient to your articles, but at the same time it must be remembered that the content information, architecture, content management system acts as the important factors that are necessary that makes your content really appreciable by your target audience.

Regarding SEO in marketing the next factor that is to consider what are the search engines looking for. In simple terms, the search engines intend to perform their jobs by referring to the users regarding the websites and the contents that are most relevant to what the users are actually looking for. Thus the content needs to be provided with a proper theme, a text, titles and subtitles that are given.

At the same time, what the search engines are not looking for is really important for any content. Overstuffing of the keywords is a flaw that can inhibit the content to get spread. If you purchase links, it will lead you to nowhere and lastly, your website may be too popular, but covering a page with too much ads will make your content hard to find for the users, which is definitely a backdrop.

Optimizing multi channels is also important for your website. The strategy of a keyword is not only to implement on the site but it must be implemented off site also and this is the reason the multi channel optimization is important. If you are consistent with the keyword phrases, it will not only help you in branding efforts but it also trains the users for using specific phrases that you are optimizing for.

The Truth About Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The Truth About Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The term “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO) can be an intimidating use of words for those who do not understand it. The details, design work, technical work and analysis that goes into developing a good SEO plan for a new website is extremely extensive, but it doesn’t have to be intimidating.

I’d like to give you a brief overview discussing the truth about SEO, why it’s important, some of the work that goes into it, and some of the myths that have evolved over the years.

What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the use of basic and advanced techniques used to help your website show up in organic search engine results for targeted keyword phrases. This means that more people will see your website, which means that more visitors will visit your site. At the end of the day, the purpose is for you to generate increased targeted customer traffic and convert them into leads.

Organic Search Engine Results are results that are generated “naturally” through the use of proper SEO methods. There are many factors that make up a great SEO plan, but the saying that “content is king” still holds as being the most recognized, influential factor.

How Search Engines Work

The reason why nobody knows everything about SEO, is because of the ever-changing algorithm that search engines use. The algorithm is a unique set of equations that create steps in solving a problem. For you, the problem is finding the website that matches your search query. The algorithm for finding the website that best matches your query is extremely complicated, which is necessary in providing you with quality results.

Think about it. When you type in something like Georgia Website Design Company into your search field, you’re expecting to find a company or companies that design websites. The algorithm is what is used to search out that term, index quality websites, and display correct results to the user. The algorithm is designed so that when you search for “Georgia Website Design Company” you don’t end up with results that have nothing to do with your search.

On top of learning and understanding the algorithm, you must relearn it every time a major change occurs to it. These changes are unscheduled, unannounced, and usually never discussed until after they’re implemented. They are in place as a way of always trying to better the results, and streamline unique information to the user as easy as possible.

Debunking SEO Myths

There are many myths that have developed in and around the world of SEO. Let’s take care of debunking some of these myths before we get started.

The Secret SEO Magic Tricks
Many SEO companies often claim that they can “get your website to the top of Google,” or they offer you up some magic formula for online success and traffic to your website, without ever explaining anything to you. Many SEO companies say they can “get you to the top of Google,” but that’s a very misleading statement when used as a blanket generalization. Search engines are much smarter than so-called “magic formulas,” and black-hat SEO tactics will render your website disabled, blacklisted, and banned from Google.

The truth is that there are no magic tricks used in a good SEO plan – just proper methods and techniques, hard work, and fresh, unique content.

I Know Everything About SEO
If you have ever heard anybody say that they know everything about SEO, then they’re not being honest. The fact is that nobody knows everything there is to know about SEO, including the employees at Google! The algorithm is too complicated for any one person to understand fully, and its constant changes and updates make it difficult to be all-knowing. However, a great SEO company can master the methods and techniques that are proven to work.

The Best Search Engine Optimization Rule

Search Engine Optimization:The Best Rule

Throughout the years, what is seen as the best Search Engine Optimization techniques has changed. When the internet first launched to the public in the mid 90’s, search engines relied on keyword tags and hyper-linking as the primary methods of ranking well. It didn’t take long for web developers and Search Engine Optimizers to find loop-holes in the methods used to rank websites, which led to the birth of what is now referred to as “black hat” SEO techniques. Black Hat techniques include methods such as keyword stuffing, meta tag hi-jacking, mirror websites, paid link farms and so on. As the evolution of these Black Hat SEO techniques grew, so did the search engine’s ability to filter honest SEO techniques.

Today’s search engine algorithms are so complex and they can easily spot the old Black Hat SEO techniques that once worked. But one ideology has never, and most likely will never change. That ideology is that Content is King.

Content is King… But What Does it Mean?

The phrase “Content is King” refers to the written content that is published on a website such as your welcome text, written content regarding your services, reviews, product descriptions, etc. At the end of the day, this is one of the most measurable substances on your website, and most would argue that it is the MOST measurable substance.

Now, you can’t just write a bunch of paragraphs and expect traffic. There is work, analysis and knowledge that is required in order to publish good content. Let’s break it down.

Writing Unique, Quality Content

The number one idea that you need to consider before writing your content, is making sure that it is going to be unique and quality content. Unique content would simply be content that can’t be found on other websites, or about a topic that is rarely discussed online. Of course, that content is pointless if the content is never being searched for. If I wrote about purple scallywags, I would probably have the number one article on the internet for purpole scallywags… but it would never get content because nobody is searching for purple scallywags.

You want to write about new stuff. Technologies, products or ideas that are not being discussed everywhere. If you intend to write content for something that is already widely published, then you’ll need to provide more details that your competitor. You can do this by allowing readers to ask questions on the page, post reviews, or vote on things regarding the topic. This will bring more readers to your page.

Google Likes Fresh Content

Search engines, especially Google, love fresh content. Adding new content to your website does several beneficial things for you.

Fresh content, means more content. Since Content is King, that means that you’re building your “Kingdom.” Fresh content also shows Google that your site has life. It’s not a stale, stagnate website that nobody pays attention to, and will therefore schedule to crawl your site more often.

Think of your website as a video store, or these days… think of it as Netflix. You login to Netflix to add a new movie to your que, right? For the first few months you are always able to find new movies to add. One day, you go to add some movies, but you can’t seem to find anything new, or anything that you like. You wait a few more days and go back, just to find that there still are not any good movies. A week goes by… still nothing new. Now you’re waiting even longer in-between each time you check.

You think that “there’s no reason to check today. There probably isn’t anything new.”

Google has the same perspective. If it visits your site and never sees new content up, or changes being made, it has no reason to come back every day. However, if there is new content every time it stops by to visit, then it’s going to come back tomorrow… maybe even later that same day.

In short, it’s important to continually add fresh content to your website. This is where experienced Search Engine Optimization companies really come in hand.

SEO: Google Local Results

By | Business Tips, Georgia Website Design, Search Engine Optimization, Social Media, Technology News | No Comments

SEO: Google Local Results

The Google search algorithm will never be completely understood. While some very accurate assumptions can be made, and we can learn a lot from Google’s press releases and written updates, it’s ever-changing lifestyle will always keep search engine marketers and website developers on their toes.

One of their more recent changes was the growing predominance of local search results. It directly effects your search by taking into consideration where the location of the search generated geographically.

For instance: Let’s say you live in Atlanta, Georgia, and you’re looking for a website design company. You’ve contacted all of the companies in your area and you haven’t really found what you’re looking for. So you head over to Google and start your search again. It’s likely that you’re search will start with something like “website design company.” Previously, a search like this would produce results from various locations around the country, and whichever website was better optimized nationally would produce the better ranking. It truly was battle of the fittest.

Since local search has been a new focus of Google’s algorithm, the landscape of the results has changed as well.

Searching for something vague, like “website design company” or even slightly more specific like “Georgia website design” will now take into consideration where the search is being made from, and will produce more localized results.

For smaller companies, this is good news. You won’t be competing as much with national corporate business in regards to search, because Google will start producing results specific to your business location. That means that if someone searches for “website design company” in Georgia, they’re not going to be bombarded with results from all over the country. Google is trying to do some thinking for you. It will produce results almost as if you added in your state and city into the search, but will still allow for national results to be produced. As an example, if you live in Columbus, Georgia and search for the term “website design company,” your results will include website design companies in Columbus, Georgia.

Some Growing Concerns

The downside to local results is that companies that are optimized nationally will be effected by this. The business that used to own vague search results will be impacted by local search producing local results. Nationally optimized websites will still rank really well, but some businesses will be moved down the results list because of local results.

With these changes occurring, it is important that you assure that your company is optimized for local search. Start simply by making sure your business location and address are clearly stated throughout the website. You’ll also want to make sure that you have claimed or verified your Google places listing, as this will improve traffic to your site from local searches as well, probably more than anything else.

Concerns are starting to spark up all over the web. Below is a perfect example of the growing concerns coming from business owners, as well as the benefits to some of the smaller, less optimized website owners.

One person wrote:

“The party is officially over. It was bad enough to be the #1 result for a local search, and have to deal with three competitors being listed with a map regardless of how poorly their sites were optimized. Google has now pushed sponsored listings away from the top of the page, and is listing up to 10 businesses in the local results. Despite having the top spot in the organic results, now I don’t even show up in the ten local results listed. I was just starting to tolerate being overlookd for three less experienced companies, now I’m the 11th name they’ll see. Anyone else affected by this?”

The very next comment was “Exactly the opposite for me ;-)”

How to Make Facebook Comments Box Crawlable and Indexable

By | Search Engine Optimization | No Comments

Facebook has recently developed a comments box that you can now use as a comment system on your website. It works the same exact way as regular commenting does, except users have to be logger into their Facebook account to use it. There are many pros to this new system; however there are a couple cons that are big enough issues to make you reconsider using the system, especially if your site is designed for Search Engine Optimization.

Facebook Comments Box

The pros of using this new Facebook commenting system are:

  • It helps fight spam as the user will need a Facebook account to post a comment. Facebook is also against spam, so reporting spam may potentially cost the spammer their account.
  • Comments posted show up on the user’s Facebook wall, which can generate more buzz and traffic from Facebook from friends of the user.
  • The most valuable comments show at the top due to a ranking algorithm Facebook developed.

The cons of using this commenting system are:

  • Users need a Facebook account and have to be logged into it to comment
  • Posts aren’t crawlable because they load within an iFrame.

Personally, the second issue is the most critical issue. Comment sections on websites are great ways to get user generate content (UGC) and if a search engine cannot pick up those comments, then they are wasted.

After searching around, a fix for this problem has been developed thanks to an engineer on the Facebook Platform team. The developer said that you can export the comments for any page that uses this system using a simple script (that can be written in many languages). The script is very simple to use and set up, and you can style the comments anyway you please so they blend in with your sites layout. Also, this isn’t considered cloaking because it’s giving search engines the exact same content users see, except it’s not within an iFrame and thus can be crawled and indexed by search engines.

Note: sometimes when a page has many comments (in the hundreds to thousands) not all of the comments are exported. This is either a coding error or something within the design of the Facebook code itself.

The link for the script is http://www.rayhe.net/fb/comments.phps

Understanding SEO Results

SEO Results Take Time

Understanding How SEO Results Work

A lot people don’t fully understand how Search Engine Optimization works. In fact, there are even many “SEO professionals” that don’t honestly understand how it works.

While nobody will ever completely master SEO and its complex algorithm, there are still some very simple key points that will assist us in understanding it.

When additions or changes are made to a website that directly effect its optimization, it’s important to understand that those changes will take some time until they will reflect in search engines. The changes will first start to show results after the are indexed by the various Search Engines.

Explaining SEO to a Client

One of the communication struggles that a website design and internet marketing company might have with their clients is trying to explain how SEO works. It’s understandable that a business owner would want to know what work is being done and how long it will take to see results. The problem is that explaining both of these answers can actually lead to more confusion and a bit of skepticism. I often find myself explaining it using several analogies, but even then, it can be easy to get lost if you don’t completely understand the terminology.

This is where client referrals and asking to see other success stories and results can come in handy. Prepare examples for new or potential clients to view that clearly show the results that their website has produced.

How Do I Get on the First Page of Google?

This is probably the most frustrating question that can be asked of an SEO professional. The question has so many complex answers behind it, and trying to explain SEO results in a way that someone can fully understand can sometimes be a lost cause. It’s not necessarily because of the lack of “being smart,” as it is simply a language barrier (sort of).

The fact is that there is no clear-cut answer to this question. There is no way to respond with a number, a timeline or a date for when the results will be produced. Some websites see substantial SEO results in 2 weeks after launching, and some may take up to 6 months. Some website will have a giant skyrocketing result in the first month, and then level off the rest of the year, while others may see increased traffic gradually, but over a longer period of time.

No company, I repeat, no company can promise “page one on Google.” The question is much deeper than that. For instance, the question could be better phrased by asking “which keywords will rank the best in Google for my website vs. which ones will not do well.” One company could be on page 1 of Google for one keyword phrase, and then page 10 for another similar keyword phrase.

When a website is first launched, it usually takes about a week or two to be indexed by Google. I’ve seen it happen as soon as 2 days, and as long as a month (for websites that have the same structure). The important thing to understand here is that it can take some time. Generally, if a website is not indexed in 3 weeks, I would suggest going back and asking your internet marketing or website design company what’s going on.

How Do I Know if my Website is Indexed?

This is a much easier answer to provide. Simple visit http://www.Google.com and enter “site:www.yourdomain.com” into the search field. It will provide results on all of your indexed website pages. If you have no results for the search, then your website has not been index yet. You can see an example here.

What Questions Should I Ask

It never hurts to go over the SEO process for your website before the development is started. Make sure that you express your concerns regarding specific keywords phrases that you have in mind before you write the content. Overstock.com Penalized for Inflated Google Rankings

By | Search Engine Optimization, Technology News | No Comments

Overstock.com Guilty of Inflating Google Rankings

Overstock.com Penalized by Google

Overstock.com is the second major retailer in the last few weeks to get penalized by Google in search engine results for violating guidelines. JC Penny received harsh penalties for allegedly buying links to artificially inflate their rankings, which violates Google’s guidelines.

Overstock was ranking at the top of Google for a lot of high money keywords, such as “vacuum cleaners” and “laptop computers.” On Tuesday though, after the penalty kicked in, they were found on pages 6 and 7 or higher, and slowly creeping farther away from the top. The further away from the top of the search engines results Overstock appears, the less likely a Google user will visit their site.

According to Overstock, the penalty was a result of Overstock’s practice of encouraging school and university websites to link back to Overstock. If the school or college linked to Overstock, the staff and students of the school were then eligible to receive discounts on the Overstock website. Overstock discontinued the program on February 10th, which is before Google contacted them, but some of the schools were slow to remove the links. The discount amount offered to students and staff at these schools was 10% on certain items, as long as the school’s website linked to Overstock using keywords like “gift baskets” or “bunk beds.”

The school and university websites Overstock was asking links from, which end in the top-level domain (TLD) “.edu”, are considered by Google’s search algorithm to be more important than other commercial websites, which end in “.com”. The “.net” and “.org” TLDs also give less of a benefit than the “.edu” TLDs. Since education websites don’t often link to commercial sites, a link from one can greatly impact the rankings of a site, boosting it to the top of the results.

Patrick Byrne, Overstock’s chief executive, stated “Google has made clear they believe these links should not factor into their search algorithm. We understand Google’s position and have made the appropriate changes to remain within Google’s guidelines.” Google will not discuss details of specific incidents like this according to their policies, but a spokesman at Google stated their goal “is to deliver the most relevant information possible.” Attempts to game Google’s results pages go on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and Google has a special team dedicated to finding these violations and taking action against them.

There are a large number of techniques that help enhance search engine positions, which is the practice of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The higher a website is ranked, the more visits the website will get, and if the site is a retail site such as Overstock, that can mean millions of dollars in sales. Some companies will hire a Professional SEO company to try and achieve these rankings, while some have in house teams.

The penalties occurred after a competitor of Overstock’s became aware of what was happening and reported the site to Google. Google then performed an investigation and then took manual action against the website.

10 Basic SEO Tips to Consider

By | Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization | One Comment

Top 10 SEO Tips | SEO Company

Top 10 Basic SEO Tips, Methods & Techniques

1 ) SEO Planning Plan your foundation SEO and website marketing strategy before you get started on developing your website. You’ll highly regret it if you wait until you’ve already started to start thinking about your strategy. This means developing unique keyword phrases, and writing unique content that supports those keywords. Content is king.

2 ) Keyword Research & Planning Hire an SEO company to do some keyword research for you, or use the necessary tools to do it yourself. I recommend using a professional company that has trained analysis in being able to dissect the information that is being researched.

Make a list of 5-10 keyword phrases that describe your products, services and company. Include locations if you are targeting a local customer. Do not use single word keywords, use 2-4 word phrases for best results.

Example: If you were a website designer located in Columbus, Georgia, then you would want to use a term like “Columbus Georgia Website Design” as your keyword phrase. To use a more broad search term, you could target Georgia Website Design. You wouldn’t just want to use “homes” as that could target someone looking to rent homes, sell homes, paint homes, sell appliances for homes, etc. Target your keywords to generate qualified customers. Make sure that you are using keywords that are actually being searched.

3 ) Content Is King This is the most important factor that will determine your website’s ranking on search engines like Google. You must have unique content. The more the better.

If you try to use content that is identical to other websites, then Google will not index it. Why does it need to show two of the same results? It doesn’t, so whoever published it originally is going to get all of the credit for the content. This is why the content must be unique.

Your best results will come from written articles that discuss something new; something that people are searching for on the web that may not have quality content yet available. For instance, if there was a new product in development (we’ll call it a “Shoebuddy Do Dop”), and nobody had written anything about it yet except for you, then most likely you’re going to be the site that ranks highest in Google for searches regarding the Shoebuddy Do Dop.

If there are 10 sites that have all published very similar content, then this is where other factors will play a role such as organic link popularity, domain age, the frequency at which new content is added to your site, unique page titles, and unique page descriptions, among other techniques.

Pre-write the content for your website and include your keywords and keywords phrases logically throughout the content. Try to use one keyword phrase every other paragraph in various forms. Make sure that you write content that users would actually read. It needs to make sense so that it doesn’t just sound like as bunch of keywords jumbled together. Search engines can see trends like that and it will end up hurting you. Include keyword phrases on every page. Most importantly, write the content for your users, not for search engines.

Building Your Website

It’s time to start building your website. Here are a few important things that you need to make sure your website design company is doing. If they’re not doing these few basics, it’s not a good sign, and you probably need to find a new website design company.

4 ) Meta Tag: Keywords It’s true that because of the deceitful trickery that people have used in the past, Google no longer sees Meta Keywords as important or as relevant as they used to be. That doesn’t mean to leave them out! Some smaller search engines still use the meta keyword tag, so as long as you’re using keywords that are honestly relevant to your website, then it won’t hurt you to add them.

Try to keep the keywords between 10-15 keywords. Separate them with commas.

meta name=”keywords” content= Enter up to 10 keywords that are relevant to your website & services.

5 ) Meta Tag: Page Title & Description These are the most important meta tags on your site. They are the first things that people searching the web will see when the results display on your page. If they are searching for “Columbus Georgia Website Design” and your website comes up, but the page is “Untitled” or has something that does not properly relay the message for that page, then it may never get clicked on.

The description tag also shows in the display of your search results, so create unique page descriptions for each section of your website. This will allow people to get a brief description of the page they are about to click on.

SEO For Your Images

Website design has gotten much prettier these days with the use of website editing tools and software that allows designers to expand their visual and cosmetic effects and not rely solely on HTML coding and basic digital imaging.

With this in mind, we must still be sure to fuse images correctly with html, or other web language formats. Here we’ll discuss a few important things that you need to know when using images… and how to use them correctly and efficiently.

6 ) Optimizing Images: When using images in your website design, it is essential that you optimize the images correctly. If an image is too large of a file size, then it will look good, but the page will take longer to load. If you make the image file size too small, then the page will load fast, but the quality of the image will be poor. Make sure to set your images to the smallest file size, while retaining the highest quality possible to the human eye. There are professional web design tools that are used for this.

7 ) Naming Your Images: Make sure that you name your images using words that associate with your website and keywords that you have chosen. At the same time, they should describe the actual image. For instance, don’t name your images something crazy like 24524rhhrkhr3809.jpg, or something simple like pic1.jpg. Instead, make your image names matter. If you own a landscaping company, name your images something similar to landscaping-services-button.jpg, or landscaping-company-in-georgia.jpg. This will contribute to your SEO strategy in the long run, and will also get your images into search results.

8 ) Using ALT Tags: Each image should have an ALT tag attached to it (alt=”alt image name”). Because search engines can’t identify what the image(s) look like effectively, what color they are, what their purpose is, what text is on them, etc. you must identify them using ALT tags, which act as “name tags” or “invisible ink” for the image(s) they represent. ALT tags also help users in the case that images don’t load correctly; the user will still be able to read the image names on each page.

9 ) Permanent Page Redirect: Your website should be setup with a permanent redirect that redirects your website to only be displayed in one format, regardless of how it is typed into the browser. For example, if someone types in vroooo.com, it should redirect to http://www.vroooom.com. Otherwise, some search engines will index the site has being two separate sites, which may lead to your content being improperly indexed.

Including A Sitemap

10 ) Sitemap Every website should have a properly developed sitemap. A sitemap on your website is simply an index of all of the pages on your website listed in a neat, orderly fashion. This allows for search engines to index your sitemap page, and have a “map” to all of the pages on your site.

A good sitemap should look similar to this one here.

This is a technical SEO function that should be set in your .htaccess or site config page.
